"Streethawk" moves my body in ways no other album by any other artist can move it. The killer piano bits after "canceling the truce again," on "The Very Modern Dance" kill me every time, references to Werner Herzog films, "no man has ever hung from the rafters of a second home," that weird sound in "The Bad Arts" where the song abruptly stops only to sneak back in, maybe one of the greatest track one's in history, etc.
Truth be told, I never really listened to Destroyer until I saw him open for the New Pornographers a couple years ago. When I went home I was a changed man, and I looked for the songs with the lines about "beggars might ride" and "don't spend your life conceiving that the widows won't get sick of their grievin." It was one of those shows that I really regret now. Even though it spurred my complete and utter obsession with all things Dan Bejar, I couldn't appreciate it then like I could now!
At one point, one of Kurt Dahle's drums fell over and I was so rapt by Destroyer that I didn't think to jump up on stage and pick it up. The guy next to me did though and he was a hero! He saved Destroyer that night and I've always been jealous!
Anyway, "Streethawk." It's almost like a stock answer for me nowadays.

i've had notorious lightning on vinyl for more than a year, but now i'm finally listening to the cd and i think it's very underrated. the cbc sessions are good but this is a lot better.

My favorite is Streethawk. Every morning I listen to Streethawk first so that's why I pick it as my favorite. This Night is pretty close to my heart as well. It's tough to choose. I can't say that I love Rubies and Your Blues any less... Picking a favorite is a toughie. My collection so far also includes Trouble In Dreams. I became a Destroyer fan last August. I'm taking my time (ahem budget is forcing me to do this). My favorite might change when I've heard more.

This is too hard... I think I would be too indecisive, and end up going to a watery grave with all of them in my arms.

Just got done with a yearlong+ obsession with Dan. So I'll give you my random, obliterated musings, if you're interested.
My favorites changed as I shuffled extensively and obsessively through his catalog. I love all of it, except the last half of Thief. I think that Kaputt and City of Daughters are his best albums. After taking a break from Dan, and viewing things with fresh eyes, I think Kaputt is better than City of Daughters because it lacks any filler material.
However, City of Daughters may be Dan's first and most important contribution to music. That was the album where Dan broke free of Pavement and Guided by Voices and made his own important advancement in the way lo-fi, short, poppy songs can feel. That rain and that walkie talkie hiss, those heady lyrics, those meta references to culture at large and pop music, etc.
Thief is shit and a transitional record into Dan's 'middle' 'band-y' period. Sure, it might have some of the best Destroyer songs, the best opening Destroyer song, etc., but the last half is very skippable and you can't say that about any other Destroyer material. And I am even one of those weird, crazy guys who absolutely adores Every Christmas. So yeah.
But once you get into Streethawk, then Dan never does a thing wrong ever again. Classic album, after classic album. This Night has to be the best out of the Streethawk - Trouble in Dreams run. It's just so unbridled and badass. I know most people think of Rubies as being the perfect 'badass' Destroyer record, but I still think This Night has that crown. Rubies, to me, is Dan's 'classic rock' album…you know…pure 70's rock, whatever that means to me…and of course, with Dan's experimental touch added….and shit…
I was surprised but happy to see all the Your Blues love. It's definitely must be in anyone's top 5 Destroyer records for them to have any credibility at all, but I always placed in further back in the pack. Shows what I know!
Here's my crazy obsessive order and rankings and shit:
Kaputt (10) City of Daughters (9.9) This Night (9.89) Your Blues (9.889) …. then the rest are 9.8's or something…. with Thief being an embarrassing 9.13!
