Shades of "My Mystery", which I liked and was always curious how it would sound in album context. Squinting at the merch photos, looks like the song "Have We Met" may be instrumental? I love ham-sandwich-on-the-couch Dan. Vocals sound great and Dan looks like he's reverse-aged. Interesting if some material was conceived for other projects, as we know was true of part of Your Blues, and Dan's side hustles are consistently good. Possibly some influence from the Berman collab too? This writeup: www.secretlystore.com/have-we-met-destroyerWas just listening to the Lightning Dust album, Dan's sweet-sounding backing vocal on "Competitive Depression". Got tickets to the shows. The enamel pin is ✨.

It Doesn’t Just Happen: liked, now am obsessed. I love the video. Wishing for an extended 12” remix a la Temptation or Pleasure Dome for bliss-out dark purposes. We have been promised it will be on the setlist; Portland or burst 2/21. 🏹 Monocle Weekly 12/15/19: monocle.com/radio/shows/the-monocle-weekly/545/destroyer/

Don't really have anything to add to the reviews and interviews. Although that in itself is interesting; each piece has offered some phrase, from Dan or descriptive, where I'm like, "s t r o n g agree". My friend actually intercepted the pre-order and spun it a couple times before I got to. We've both been in elevated cultural anticipation mode, with this and the new Picard show, perhaps explains why they'd independently put on a Destroyer album, out of character. Their review: "New Order*/Dylan-y lyrics/Bejar voice." (*as a synth-phobic, New Order being their shorthand for anything electronic but also good.) Also, their eyes totally dilated at the pin and cover art: "WOAH Cool cover OMG that's AWESOME!" So my first listen was Sunday, desperately hungover in my car, in the soaking fucking Seattle rain. First spin felt sparse, but that quality grew on repeats to this relentless ghostly presence more-eloquent professionals have described. Dan Bejar has not often made me sob, but... Very interested to see this live in a couple weeks. I still want this photo from the Pitchfork article to be the cover. Figured out it's the rooftop parking at the Sun Wah building in Chinatown. Feels like a fitting counterpoint to the Queen Elizabeth Park shot on Kaputt:

I really liked the new album but still have to listen to it some more when I'll have the time. My favourites as of now are The Raven & The Man in Black's Blues - it's such a good combination of dark and bittersweet. Still can't help but feel like foolssong ends way too soon though, that song could go on double its length, still have to get used to that when comparing it to some of his older records. I should probably go see the band in either Milan or Prague but it's an entire day bus ride for me to both of those places, will see about that...

Portland for the tour kickoff at the Aladdin on Friday. Shittiest drive - usually takes @4 hours, closer to 6 this time and that inescapable sideways sun we get at these latitudes.
So we were tired, and the venue was really hot. Sat in the balcony. The opener covered The River. Saw Dan’s fam were there. I bought a tshirt with a suggestive hot pink microphone.
The set started with 3 from the new album and sounded great. The bass kept making this Brown Sound, not sure if it was intentional. Dan’s voice sounded more harsh. So pleased always to see Josh Wells - absolutely fantastic, he is so so great. Cue Synthesizer was a highlight, it was quite unhinged. Foolssong I was sure would be the closer and it was beauty, but then they played European Oils? Encore was Canadian Lover!!!! Another highlight for me. Followed by Bay of Pigs, by which point I was weary that there were 5 songs from Kaputt at the expense of such a deep catalog. Again, hot and tired.
This admittedly was my 16th time seeing Destroyer. But I would trade some of the songs that get played frequently for ... I had an idea they might do Notorious Lightning or some off Your Blues since there’s a kin with Have We Met. I’d like to see Sun In The Sky, the Hospital/Catwalk medley that was so good last tour, the spooky stripped version of Archer On The Beach, oh and The Bad Arts. Trembling Peacock, Queen of Languages? Glad I got to see Bye Bye performed several times - that would be a sweet surprise substitute for Times Square.
Looking forward to Seattle and Vancouver in a few weeks!

Found this very recent interview and I thought it was great, both conversation and setting -
Canadian lover sounds like a real treat! I can see your point, I'd imagine many songs from Your Blues would fit the set list these days. Also, have they ever performed Bye Bye as an entire band rather than Dan with just a guitar?
Trembling Peacock is dangerously close to being my favourite Destroyer song of all time so I couldn't agree more, I think it would go well with foolssong these days.
I've just read a local music review of Have We Met and the guy started with how he's still mesmerised by the 2011 show he saw, around the time Kaputt came out, just thought that was interesting how a live show can have such an impact after it's been a while.

Hi, everyone. Just checking in now since I have so much time on my hands. We drove out to Tucson to catch the 2/24 show. The venue was a historic hotel which they seem to play at a lot. Kinda small compared to the usual venues we see Destroyer play. The crowd was great, though. No Joseph on saxophone this time, maybe he's parted ways/on hiatus with the band. The set was short for my liking but they really blew out these new songs. They really came alive for me. Anyway, I'm just glad I got to see them live, I know they cancelled the last part of the tour and headed back to BC. In case you're interested someone did create an instagram account for the band: @destroyer_band. Some cool stuff there. Also, some recordings are starting to pop up. Live set with MPR's the Current. Plus, someone recorded the whole show from LA. Hope everyone's keeping safe!
